Bringing Abundant Life to Families Living in Poverty in Uganda

About our Foundation

Abundant Life Uganda is a faith-based charitable organisation registered in Northern Ireland, which aims to alleviate poverty by sustainably supporting families in Uganda. We do this through income generating courses and grants, education sponsorships as well as community outreach and development projects.

After volunteering in Uganda for several years with a variety of organisations it challenged us to start a small scale charitable trust run by volunteers where your entire donation reaches the point of need directly.

Challenges we Face

In Uganda there is no free education system, even the government run schools require significant parent contributions. This means for many families living in poverty there is no hope of an education of all of their children. With 48% of the Ugandan population under the age of 15 and 20 % of the population living under the poverty line(less that $1 per day) this is a huge problem in Uganda. We are primarily working with families in the slum areas of Kampala to start small businesses and be self-sustaining but with many mothers having over 5 children sometimes education sponsorship support is necessary as well.

Some of the children we meet don’t have a safe place to live full time so we try to provide boarding school places for them. For £25 per month you can provide a child with an education in a safe environment, breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bunk bed in the school dormitory.

We are always in need of new or gently-used clothes and bed sheets for the children in our program. Please get in touch if you wish to contribute in this way and we can arrange to pick these up.

Your sponsorship / donation will give hope and a future to a child whose family cannot afford an education. Your generosity is changing lives!

What we Do

Community Outreach

We run a community outreach program in Children’s Corner Junior School on the outskirts of Makerere-Kivulu slum in Kampala. This is an opportunity for any child from the community to come into a safe environment to play games, make crafts, listen to a message from the Bible, sing worship songs and take part in reading groups.

Medical Grants

Through our community workers and community outreach events we have come in contact with families needing urgent medical support. Some are relatively small scale cases such as malaria or typhoid which can be treated for under £20 and others being urgent life-saving brain surgery costing several hundred pounds.

Women Empowerment

Minimum wage in Uganda is £21 per month which is what many poorly-educated women are paid when employed. Many women don’t have access to capital to start a business. We have already proven this concept as a sustainable project with a handful of pilot families. We have partnered with another Ugandan organisation, Abide Family Centre.

Supporting Schools

We work very closely with Children’s Corner Junior School in Central Kampala. The school provides education for 220 children – 60 of these are ‘boarders’ from challenging backgrounds across Kampala and the other 140 are mostly from the Kivulu slum which is adjacent to the school.

Boarding-School Sponsorship

Some of the children we meet don’t have a safe place to live full time so we try to provide boarding school places for them. For £25 per month you can provide a child with an education in a safe environment, breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bunk bed in the school dormitory.

Home Visits

Several of the parents of the children on our sponsor program are suffering with long-term medical problems and other children are looked after by grandparents or even great-grandparents. It is very difficult for these carers to find jobs or have the energy and health to sustain a business.
