What We Do

We want to show the love of God and bring abundant life to families living in poverty in Kampala through our dedicated work programs.

Education Sponsorship Program
In Uganda there is no free education system, even the government run schools require significant parent contributions. This means for many families living in poverty there is no hope of an education of all of their children. With 48% of the Ugandan population under the age of 15 and 20 % of the population living under the poverty line(less that $1 per day) this is a huge problem in Uganda. We are primarily working with families in the slum areas of Kampala to start small businesses and be self-sustaining but with many mothers having over 5 children sometimes education sponsorship support is necessary as well.

Boarding-School Sponsorship
Some of the children we meet don’t have a safe place to live full time so we try to provide boarding school places for them. For £25 per month you can provide a child with an education in a safe environment, breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bunk bed in the school dormitory.
Your sponsorship will give hope and a future to a child whose family cannot afford an education. Your generosity is changing lives!
We are always in need of new or gently-used clothes and bed sheets for the children in our program. Please get in touch if you wish to contribute in this way and we can arrange to pick these up.

Community Outreach
Most Saturdays we run a community outreach program in Children’s Corner Junior School on the outskirts of Makerere-Kivulu slum in Kampala. This is an opportunity for any child from the community to come into a safe environment to play games, make crafts, listen to a message from the Bible, sing worship songs and take part in reading groups. We also use this program to distribute new or gently used clothes, shoes and personal hygiene items to the families who come in extreme need.
We have volunteers coming several times a year so please get in touch if you would like to donate any gently used clothes or shoes. We will be happy to update you with where your kind donations end up.

Medical Grants
Although there is a free government health care service in Uganda it is very limited with hospitals often having little or no medication and being very understaffed. Through our community workers and community outreach events we have come in contact with families needing urgent medical support. Some are relatively small scale cases such as malaria or typhoid which can be treated for under £20 and others being urgent life-saving brain surgery costing several hundred pounds.
Families we know in the community have lost children and parents because they can’t afford medical care of £10. We want to make sure that does not happen again.
Marvin’s teenage mother abandoned him when she realised he had an abnormality and his grandmother has been caring for him since. Doctors said he had months to live before the excess fluid permanently damaged his brain function. All thanks to a pro-active grandmother seeking help and kind donations to Abundant Life Uganda we were able to provide the surgeries Marvin needed and he is now a happy healthy boy joining Primary 1 next term.
Please get in touch if you would like to partner with us in providing for our medical grants.

Women Empowerment
Minimum wage in Uganda is £21 per month which is what many poorly-educated women are paid when employed. Many women don’t have access to capital to start a business. We have already proven this concept as a sustainable project with a handful of pilot families. We have partnered with another Ugandan organisation, Our social workers have developed an intense 2-week business and parenting course for the women selected for this project. Common businesses we have seen work before are on street businesses including fruit and vegetable shop, canteen, tailoring, hairdressing and solar lights. The scheme works on very basic and simple parameters:

  • - Loan maximum: £100
  • - 3 Months no repayments.
  • - Monthly repayments: £10 for 10 months.

The cost of the course is £50 per woman, meaning £150 can bring dignity, financial stability and sustainability to a family in Uganda. Please get in touch if you would like to partner with us and we will keep you updated about progress and achievements in the life of a family because of your donation.

Supporting Schools
We work very closely with Children’s Corner Junior School in Central Kampala. The school provides education for 220 children – 60 of these are ‘boarders’ from challenging backgrounds across Kampala and the other 140 are mostly from the Kivulu slum which is adjacent to the school. The Kivulu slum is home to over 30,000 people the vast majority of whom have no formal paid jobs and literally live hand to mouth day by day. The pupils here pay minimal fees because of their family background and the school does not have the extra cash flow for refurbishments.
In a recent refurbishment project we were able to tile the previously concrete floors and walls bathrooms. We were also able install running water, which allowed all 15 toilets to be fitted with a flushing facility and sinks to improve hygiene in the school. There is now a tiled area with taps for children to bathe every evening. This has made life a lot easier for the children living at school who used to have to carry water for bathing from a well and increased sanitation and hygiene for all children in the school.
Refurbishments can be anything from a pot of paint for £6, a new bunk bed for £50 to major projects as mentioned above. Please get in touch if you would like more information about partnering with us in this way.

Home Visits
Several of the parents of the children on our sponsor program are suffering with long-term medical problems and other children are looked after by grandparents or even great-grandparents. It is very difficult for these carers to find jobs or have the energy and health to sustain a business. We make it a priority to go and visit these carers in their homes, provide some essentials such as rice, beans and soap and pray with them. The teachers and social workers often go to visit the homes of children who have stopped coming to school and find out why, for most families the reason their children are not in school is due to lack of school fees. Some families need short-term financial support or capital for their business after a family tragedy or divorce and some need longer-term support through our sponsor system. When staff or volunteers visit a home to listen and support, it is a tangible way to show the love of Jesus and build relationships with the families from this community.
